Here are some of the best day walks in Middlemarch:

Go south from Middlemarch about 7 km along SH87, then 2.5 km along the unsealed Kidds Road.

3.5 km loop

Easy

Sutton Salt Lake is New Zealand’s only inland salt lake. It has no outlet, so the lake has concentrated the salts from surrounding soils. No dogs allowed.

Access and parking are at Kilmory Station, just south of Lug Creek.

10 km one way

Moderate to Challenging

Hike or bike from Kinvara Station to the Rock and Pillar Range summit (1350m above sea level), with panoramic views across Otago.

At the intersection of SH87 and Ngapuna Road, follow the Otago Central Rail Trail north for 200m to reach the start of the track.

8.9 km one way

Challenging

A steep ascent leading to the edge of the Rock and Pillar Conservation Area. Be sure to bring plenty of water and prepare for rugged terrain.

Signposted from SH87 (Wandle Road). The access road (a 4WD road through private property) begins near the junction with McKinnon Road.

5.3 km one way

Challenging

A steep climb to the historic Big Hut in the Rock and Pillar Conservation Area, offering stunning alpine views. Best suited for fit trampers.

Parking is near the southern end of Gladbrook Road.

13 km one way

Moderate

A scenic trek over the Rock and Pillar Range, accessible from Gladbrook Road or Old Dunstan Road, offering diverse landscapes and expansive views.
