Middlemarch – the Gateway to Central Otago
Middlemarch lies in the midst of the stunning dramatic landscape of the Strath Taieri region. The Rock and Pillar Range rises like a vast towering wave to the west, snow-capped in winter and jagged year-round with rocky schist tors on the summits, like ancient ruins.

Towards a More Sustainable Tourism
Nō tātou katoa te haepapa – it’s our shared responsibility

Whether on foot, bike, horseback or by car, please travel with care: respect the land and locals, leave no trace (waiho i te taiao kia purea), and support local where you can. Your visit helps keep the Strath Taieri resilient, connected, and vibrant. Ngā mihi nui – thank you for travelling thoughtfully.

The Taieri Gorge Ltd tourist train, operated by Dunedin Railways, officially launched in February 1987.
Today the Taieri Gorge Train operates between Dunedin and Pukerangi, just 21km from Middlemarch. We retain the hope that it will once again run to Middlemarch within the not-too-distant future.
