Grocott’s Organic Community Garden

Grocott’s Organic Community Garden

The Grocott Organic Community Garden in Middlemarch is a vibrant and educational space located at the Railway Precinct. This organic garden serves multiple purposes, including demonstrating sustainable food production methods such as composting, making liquid plant food, and mulching to conserve moisture and control weeds.

The garden is a community-driven project supported by local businesses and residents. It features raised beds filled with soil and manure from local farms, and a charming “Little Red Tool Shed” donated by the Blokes Shed of Mosgiel.

Community members meet at the garden every Wednesday from 10 am to 12 pm to engage in leisurely gardening activities and share knowledge. The produce grown is distributed locally, with any excess donated to food banks.

The Middlemarch Volunteer Fire Brigade welcomes new volunteers who are eager to serve the community. The brigade responds to various emergencies, including fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, and more.

Joining the brigade is a great way to contribute to your community, gain valuable skills and connect with other community focused people.

The Middlemarch Volunteer Fire Brigade typically meets for training every Wednesday at 7pm. These sessions cover various aspects of firefighting, including equipment handling, emergency response techniques, and safety procedures. The crew also offers social activities for its members and supporters, so pop along and see if it’s for you.

The Middlemarch Golf Course is a fantastic 9-hole course located in the picturesque location only 500m from the Middlemarch township. This public parkland course offers a par 72 layout, stretching over 5650 metres. Golfers can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the distant Rock and Pillar as they navigate the well kept course.

The club is known for its friendly atmosphere and welcoming community, making it a great spot for both seasoned golfers and newcomers. Or a great thing to do for those visiting the Strath Taieri Valley.

The green fees for Middlemarch Golf Club are very affordable. For adults, the green fee is $25 for a round, while juniors can play for $10.

Middlemarch Museum

The Middlemarch Museum is a hidden gem located on Aberafon Street in Middlemarch, Otago. This quaint museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the social history of the Strath Taieri farming community. Visitors can explore an eclectic collection of artifacts and recreated scenes from the past, including a unique 1873 submarine named Platypus, designed for gold prospecting. Additionally, the museum houses an extensive collection of horse-drawn implements, farming tools, and local railway history.

The museum is open:

  • Thursday to Monday, 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM (February to April), and
  • Friday to Sunday, 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM (October to January).

Need a different time? We’re happy to open by appointment! The museum welcomes visitors to delve into the rich heritage of Middlemarch. Admission is by donation, making it an accessible and enriching experience for all.

Middlemarch Swimming Club

Middlemarch Swimming Club

The Middlemarch Swimming Pool is a much-loved community facility, conveniently located near the Strath Taieri School on the main road. Operated by the Middlemarch Swimming Club, this heated indoor pool maintains a comfortable temperature of 26–28°C, making it ideal for swimming from mid-October through to March.

The pool provides a welcoming space for recreational swimmers and those keen to improve their skills. It’s a great place for families and individuals to enjoy a refreshing swim, with changing rooms available onsite.

Casual Day Rates (for out-of-town visitors):
Please note: Rates may be updated from time to time.

  • Adult: $10
  • Child: $5

A $30 deposit is required for a fob, available from Maggie’s (the local shop).
