Who Are We?
The Discover Middlemarch Group is a collaboration of local volunteers dedicated to celebrating and sharing the unique story of Middlemarch. United by a love for our community, we work together to preserve its rich history, support local businesses, and welcome visitors to experience all that Middlemarch has to offer. Whether you’re here to explore, connect, or simply discover something new, we’re here to help you uncover the heart of our special part of the country.
Meet the committee
Linda MacKenzie
I moved to Middlemarch with my husband Ian in 2017, where we are now retired. My ties to the area run deep—my grandfather managed the Creamery near Rock Creek in the 1920s, and my father went to school here. My first visits to Middlemarch were as a small child, when we came to stay with some of my mother’s family who lived where the Foote family now live. I have fond memories of summer holidays in an old farm house near the Rock and Pillar railway siding and BBQs with the Lions Club after arriving on the Taieri Gorge Train. With no business interests, just a love for this place, nothing beats coming over the hill and seeing that spectacular Strath Taieri view.

Together with my partner, we’ve had the privilege of raising our three children here in Middlemarch — giving them a childhood shaped by wide open spaces, close friendships, and a deep connection to this place. I’ve come to truly appreciate the unique rhythm of life that defines Middlemarch, and I’m often struck by the breathtaking landscape that opens up as you head home across the plains. I know how lucky I am to leave behind the pace of the city and return to the wide skies and quiet roads. I’m passionate about helping our town thrive, and I’ve been actively involved in a number of community groups dedicated to celebrating and sharing what makes Middlemarch such a unique and special place.

I’ve lived in Middlemarch for the past 10 years and have been actively involved in volunteering with many community groups. Before moving here, I visited regularly — the A&P Show and Easter weekend activities were always highlights for me. I have a background in education with over 20 years’ teaching experience, including 8 years as a teaching principal. In recent years, I’ve worked as the manager of the Regional Sports Association for Otago Rowing. I have a strong empathy for our youth and a deep love for the Strath Taieri Valley. In winter, you’ll often find me roaming the beautiful countryside on my horse, Kesha.

Having lived in Middlemarch for 13 years now, I feel passionate about the adventure playground at our back door. I enjoy hiking, biking, and love meeting new people passing through. My husband and I farm locally and run The Farm Bed and Breakfast, a small and welcoming stay for visitors. I feel privileged to live in such a supportive small community.
Terina Geddes
I’ve called Middlemarch home since 2007, where my husband and I farm and raise our family in the heart of Strath Taieri. Over the years, I’ve become deeply involved in the community through various committees and now serve as a member of the Community Board. I firmly believe you get out of a community what you put into it—and Middlemarch proves that every day. It’s a place where kids can still be kids, and where neighbours pitch in to make things happen. Whether it’s the wide open spaces, nature walks, cycling trails, fishing spots, sports clubs, rich history, great coffee or a cold beer with friends—Middlemarch offers something for everyone. It’s a community I’m proud to be part of, and one I’m committed to helping thrive.

In Tribute to Anne Elliot and Dennis Bowers
The Discover Middlemarch committee wishes to acknowledge the late Anne Elliot of Larchgrove Web Design, whose creativity and dedication brought the original Middlemarch website to life in 2011. Anne’s vision for a welcoming, informative online presence helped shine a light on the unique character of Middlemarch and the wider Strath Taieri.
After Anne’s passing, Dennis Bowers, a talented computer whizz, took up the mantle of maintaining the site. Thanks to Dennis’s care and technical skill, the website remained a valued resource for residents and visitors for many years.
With the loss of both Anne and Dennis, the original website stood as a quiet tribute to their contributions. As we launch this new chapter with Discover Middlemarch, we honour their legacy. Much of the content from the original site has been carefully archived, ensuring their work — and the heart behind it — is preserved for future generations.
Their commitment to our community will not be forgotten.
